Tutorial Tuesday: ABCs

Filed under: alphabet, doll quilt, embroidery, free pattern, sampler, tutorial — jennicakes @ 6:32 pm

I don’t think I’ve mentioned it here, but one thing I really love is a good sampler containing the alphabet. And I rend not to mention it because traditional alphabet samplers are generally needlepoint or cross-stitch, not quilts at all.

Thankfully, there are quilters who want to change all that. First up: one of the many projects to be found at Orange Flower’s lovely patterns and tutorials blog.

Don’t you love this??? The size is just perfect, and there are so many possible variation to match any decor: boy/girl, adult/child, home/school/office, Christmas/Easter, fall/spring.

This would look great in redwork. Or blackwork. Imagine blackwork on colored linen! Or framed instead of bound, if that’s your thing….

Okay, at this point, I’m pretty much just taking up your time. And you need your time to make alphabet samplers. Find out how here.

Bluebirds of Happiness

Filed under: applique, baby, embroidery, flickr, vintage — jennicakes @ 5:25 pm

I want to end the week on a good note (who doesn’t???), so here’s a dose of true cuteness:

Bluebird Quilt

Vintage bluebird quilt, photo by Jaspenelle of Paganites. There was a time I wasn’t wild about tied quilts, and now I’m not sure why. Maybe because ties are sort of casual and playful? And, wonderful as that is, casual doesn’t go with every quilt top.

These blue birds, however, are perfect candidates for ties. The yarn looks wonderful with the embroidered detail on the birdies, and I can just imagine each little knotted length blowing in the breeze. Ties aside, these solid colors are so simple and stunning. Even the white binding, which I normally don’t care for, adds such lightness and freshness.

Love, love, love. I hope some part of your weekend looks even a little bit like this quilt.

hexy idea #6: make a border

Filed under: applique, embroidery, flickr, hexagons — jennicakes @ 4:41 pm

I love the way letterwoman arranged these hexes into a border:

99/365 Appliquéd Name Tag

Hexes can go together in so many ways, it’s easy to forget that they can look fabulous in a single row. This is a quilt label, but the border would look great on a quilt of any size.

Snowpocalypse 2010

Filed under: applique, embroidery, flickr — jennicakes @ 6:00 pm

Now that I live in California, I really can’t commiserate with my friends and family about Snowmaggedon, snomg, the snowtastrophe that is hitting the Eastern part of the US right now.

I can, however, post a quilted scene of a snowy day:

October Quilting Journey

(Click the pic for larger sizes – it’s totally worth it.)

I’m sure the last thing you want to see is more of the white stuff, but, you’ve got to admit, this quilt by lucyellen06 is pretty masterful. Look how she used beads to make the snow twinkle!

Not a bad way to spend a snow day….

LeiLiLaLoo!

Filed under: applique, embroidery, etsy — jennicakes @ 11:22 am

Today’s post is going to take a distinctly “if money were no object” flavor, as picnic cloths by LeiLiLaLoo have me in a constant state of covet.

That being said, the cloths aren’t expensive, when you consider all the work and creativity that goes into them. And while they’re not quilts, they’re close to it.

One of these days, I will definitely have to spring for one.

You can, too, at her etsy shop, or just browse around her beautiful life at her blog.

Thanks!

Filed under: applique, embroidery, etsy, thanksgiving — jennicakes @ 8:38 am

After a month and a day of my little bloggy effort, I want to extend a special Turkey Day “Thank You” to everyone who has stopped by, commented, shared photos, and just generally helped to make the world a quiltier place.

You are awesome!

Thank You Bird mini-quilt by baumcat.
